Our assessment: condition met. War with Iran broke out in June 2025 and again at larger scale in 2026. Consequent met. In June 2025 the Pentagon redirected anti-drone munitions from Ukraine to American forces in the Middle East. Defense Secretary Hegseth confirmed that diversion in congressional testimony, saying only that "we're going to surge counter UAS systems to our troops and our bases and our places first", without giving a number or naming the weapon. The figure of roughly 20,000 anti-Shahed munitions is President Zelensky's own, given in his words in June 2025 and reported separately; we had attributed it to Hegseth under oath, and that was wrong. The July 2025 pause on Patriot interceptors and precision munitions to Ukraine is real and was reversed on 8 July 2025, but the Atlantic Council account cited here attributes it to a Department of Defense global review rather than to Middle East stockpile strain, and reports a Pentagon Joint Staff study finding the paused supplies would not jeopardise American readiness if delivered. That cuts against the rationale we gave, so we withdraw it. The Congressional Research Service insight of 12 March 2026 cuts both ways and we say so: it states the Patriot interceptor stockpile "remains extremely strong", which does not support the Patriot shortfall we asserted, while recording that in June 2025 the United States reportedly fired a quarter of its historical purchases of THAAD interceptors defending Israel and that the department may be moving Patriot and THAAD components to Central Command from other theatres. By March 2026 the Pentagon was weighing diversion of PURL air defence interceptors to the Iran fight, weighed rather than done.
